| "My artistic approach is not to do a historical document, but more a portrayal of a scene that has happened many times in many places in the West. I want to give that scene as much visual impact as possible, so the detail and action are as accurate as I can make them."
Just the facts: Born in New York and raised in Scarsdale Studied his craft at the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute. Member of the Greenwich Workshop Family of artists since 1974. Did you know? Frank studied with renowned anatomy teacher and author George Bridgeman and well know depression era painter Reginald Marsh. McCarthy was inspired by Will James novels and N.C. Wyeth's colourful, thrilling book illustrations. He is responsible for some of the most memorable action film posters in cinema history, including several striking images for the James Bond movies. Franks western paintings have been exhibited everywhere from France's Grand Palais to the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. He has had retrospectives and one man Exhibitions in such prestigious museums and galleries as the Favell Museum in Oregon, The Leanin Tree Museum in Colorado, the Gilcrease Museum in Oklahoma, the Museum of Southwest in Texas, and the Norton Museum in Louisiana. Frank recently reached the impressive milestone that few in the industry can claim; one hundred of his paintings have been published as limited edition fine art prints. What the experts say: The artist creates heroic images of the American West. To view Frank McCarthy's artwork is to be right in the middle of the action.
Whether its subjects are Indians, mountain men, cavalry or cowboys, McCarthy's work has such intensity that each painting is practically a moving picture, sure to appeal to anyone who loves classic film westerns.
Here is art combining energy and accuracy, making Frank McCarthy one of the West's finest contemporary painters. |
